Task 7 – Diversity and Globalization

Globalization is the free movement of services, goods, people, ideologies, technology, and money from one zone to another. Globalization involves the action of sharing by nations of information, products, cultures, and ideologies. The phenomenon also relates to the interdependence of economies across the globe, which increases the transfer of technology, capital, services, and goods through cross-border mobility (Feenstra & Weinstein, 2017). Globalization is essential because it gives nations a comparative advantage where countries who are experts in producing a particular commodity can export it to those who are less efficient in producing the product. Moreover, globalization leads to the exchange of cultural ideals hence increasing diversity, which may have both negative and positive consequences on culture and diversity. Globalization leads to cultural identities’ loss through consumerism, assimilation, language, and western ideals.

Globalization poses a significant danger to cultural identity because of the increasing threat of absorption and assimilation. Advances in technology such as the internet have brought unforeseen access to different cultures, which creates a gateway for a much larger audience to hear, see, and experience phenomena that it had never accessed before. Consequently, the unmonitored access contributes to stereotyping, misrepresentation, and the potential loss of cultural identities.

Multinational corporations have a significant negative influence on culture and diversity through the promotion of consumerism. For example, multinational organizations engage in global promotions of their products. Dominant brands like KFC, Coca-Cola, and McDonald’s edge out local companies from the market while imposing European or American consumer behaviors on other cultures. Moreover, the fast-food sector encourages production efficiency values. Consequently, the traditional foods appear less profitable resulting in traditional foods stores losing the opportunity to prosper and exist. The increase in access to foreign commercial products and media absorbs cultural influences.

Similarly, loss of group identities and individualism happens when globalization promotes a Western value of individuality, which promotes homogeneity in beliefs and values. Through computer-mediated technologies, societies absorb Western ideologies and cultures where the dominant population determines the current cultural trend (Walsham, 2017). The younger generations emulate the popular culture of the day making them become more like the dominant culture losing their individual and cultural identities (Hong & Cheon, 2017). The influence of Western values can lead to cultural degradation because of standardization and unification where societies around the world share the same cultural behaviors.

Lastly, many societies view their language as a primary expression of cultural identity and diversity. Because of globalization, media exposure leads to the younger generation getting access to a variety of popular slang and vocabulary. This exposure can lead to the marginalization of paternal or local languages (Hong & Cheon, 2017). Moreover, it may cause some of the indigenous languages to cease to exist. For instance, English is now the dominant language around the world. Most of the world’s major economies use English making other languages less essential.

Conclusion

Globalization results in the loss of cultural identity through consumerism, assimilation, language, and western ideals. Even though globalization leads to cultural values exchange of different nations, the convergence of cultures and traditions can lead to absorption or assimilation of low cultures by the dominant ones. The influence of multinational countries through commercialization imposes European and American consumer behaviors and ideologies on other cultures. However, despite these negative effects, societies can filter through the various influences and decide whether to integrate them or reject them.
