While work with genes can be powerful and medically advantageous, it does not proceed without controversy. Due to the potential and proven advances, the federal government offers grants and research opportunities to keep up with the initiatives that the worldwide field already in progress. Other countries, not restricted to the plethora of political and religious passions of United States, are proceeding with initiatives that the US proceeds with more caution.
The program started in 1990 and in 2003 groups formed a coalition to help bring more focus on the ethical, legal, and social issues associated with genetic research. The Centers of Excellence in ELSI Research, CEER, joined forces with the U.S. Department of Energy and National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
